Luke 12:16-21 "And HE spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits ? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But GOD said unto him, THOU FOOL, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou has provided ? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward GOD. "
Very few people desire to die young, so length of days is, indeed, important to them. However, many are also desirous of amassing wealth and accumulating possessions in this lifetime. If they were asked to articulate a motto for their lives, it might be something like this common quotation - " He who dies with the most "toys" (wealth & possessions) wins ! " Examples of this typical outlook on life abound both in the Scriptures and in everyday life around us, but is the accumulation of wealth and /or possessions a true measure of a person's life ? Many people of wealth have come to the end of a miserable, lonely life with the realization that their riches never genuinely satisfied them and did nothing to bring them close to their CREATOR.
. . . . . . . But is still DEAD ! |
JESUS addressed this very matter. Responding to a request from a man who wanted HIM to intervene in the division of an inheritance, JESUS warned, " Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth (Luke 12:15). HE then spoke the parable of a man who trusted in his riches, laying up treasure for himself but not being rich toward GOD. To him GOD said, " THOU FOOL, this night thy soul shall be required of thee "(v.20). His riches would not follow him at death. The value of a life is not found in longevity, in the accumulation of this world's goods, in any earthly object, or in philosophy. GOD sent HIS SON to save from sin, death, and hell " whosoever " (John 3:16). Riches cannot save you. The only destiny apart from GOD's Salvation is eternal separation from HIM - in Hell, a place of torment. Believe on JESUS and be saved. Trust in CHRIST without delay ! JED
