1st.Corinthians 6:19-20 "What ? know ye not that your body is the temple of the HOLY GHOST which is in you, which ye have of GOD, and ye are not your own ? For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify GOD in your body, and in your spirit, which are GOD's."
The Gospel -- the "good news" of eternal life received through the person and work of JESUS CHRIST -- is offensive to mankind because it entails the lordship of CHRIST. A word of caution is in order, however: The Gospel is not that we must "make JESUS LORD" in order to be saved. The one who believes the Gospel has a new MASTER, regardless of if he even fully comprehends it at the time. First Corinthians 15:3 tells us, "CHRIST died for our sins" -- HE paid the price for our redemption with HIS shed blood (Ephesians 1:7); thus, we are not our own master. Rather, we belong to ANOTHER: JESUS CHRIST. "[We] are not [our] own" (vv. 19-20), nor are we to follow other people (1st.Corinthians 7:23). Our LORD and MASTER is none other than our great SAVIOR.
We naturally are averse to the idea of being a servant to someone else; however, we fail to realize that we often are slaves to our own flesh. We want to answer only to ourselves and submit to no one. The offense of the Gospel in this area, too, is once again the result of selfish pride. As the children of GOD, we need to grasp that the lordship of CHRIST is an essential part of our identity. While we could look at the many texts of Scripture in which believers are described as "servants" of JESUS CHRIST, notice Luke 14:25-33 where we discover that if we are truly disciples of JESUS, then HE, as our LORD, will have precedence over three areas in our life: priority over family (Luke 14:26a pictured above), priority over self (Luke 14:26b pictured above), and priority over possession or things (Luke 14:33 pictured above). The lordship of CHRIST means enjoying the freedom to live a life that brings glory to our SAVIOR. That is not bondage -- that is genuine liberty. What a wonderful truth ! MDC
Your servant in CHRIST,
Julie
