Zechariah 12:1-8 "The burden of the WORD of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the Earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him. Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the Earth be gathered together against it. In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment and his rider with madness: and I will open MINE eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.
And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their GOD. In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf: and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem. The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah. In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at the day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as GOD, as the angel of the LORD before them."
The phrases "in that day" and "the day of the LORD" are in the remaining three chapters of Zechariah's prophecy over a dozen times. When mentioned in the context of GOD's dealings with HIS covenant people Israel, this "day" refers to the events surrounding the Second Advent of CHRIST, including the seven-year Tribulation when the LORD judges and purges sin from Israel (Zechariah 13:1-2), the physical return of JESUS to the Mount of Olives (Zechariah 14:4-5), the subsequent defeat of the enemy host gathered against Jerusalem (Zechariah 12:8), GOD's deliverance of a believing Jewish remnant (Zechariah 13:9 pictured above), and the millennial reign of JESUS CHRIST the KING upon this earth (Zechariah 14:9 pictured below). These prophecies recorded in chapters 12-14 detail GOD's final judgment and Israel's preparation and entrance into the promised -- though long-delayed -- earthly kingdom.
This is an awesome panorama of future events, and it is the culmination of GOD's plan for the ages. HE has the power to bring all these things to pass. The scorner and the skeptic look at Bible prophecy and say, "Its' all figurative, symbolic, allegorical, and [somehow] spiritually fulfilled in the church." Read verse one: GOD, the CREATOR of the universe, can and will do as HE pleases ! Through the centuries, Satan has made a concerted effort to destroy Israel and Jerusalem and to wipe out the Israelites from the Earth. But in the days ahead, when CHRIST returns to keep the covenant promises HE made with the patriarchs and with King David, then HIS chosen people will be the fear of all opposing nations rather than the terrorized (vv.2-7). When JESUS CHRIST leads them to battle "in that day" the weakest will be as strong as the mighty King David (v.8) ! DWC
