" Why Do the Heathen Rage ? "

Psalm 2:1-12   " Why do the heathen (nations) rage, and the people imagine a vain (foolish) thing ?  The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against HIS anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
HE that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh:  the LORD shall have them in derision.  Then shall HE speak unto them in HIS wrath, and vex (trouble) them in HIS sore (great) displeasure.  Yet have I set (founded) MY KING upon MY holy hill of Zion.  I will declare the decree:  the LORD hath said unto ME, THOU art MY SON;  this day have I begotten THEE.

Ask of ME, and I shall give THEE the heathen for THINE inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for THY possession.  THOU shalt break them with a rod of iron; THOU shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.  Kiss the SON (act of homage), lest HE be angry, and ye perish from the way, when HIS wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in HIM.     Psalm 2:1-12
No one needs to prove to us that the ungodly are raging today and that people all over the world are imagining and falling for vain, unbiblical things on every hand (v.1).  But it is important to have GOD's answer to the question above, Why do the heathen rage ?  The unregenerate world is giving all kinds of answers as they vainly struggle for peace, prosperity, and unity.  Many claim that the raging of the heathen would cease if all the religions of the world could just get together or if racial prejudice could be eradicated or if poverty could be abolished by some program of so-called  "economic justice"  that assures all mankind of financial equality.  These  "answers,"  however, ignore the basic problem of man's inherent sinfulness, and they substitute man's philosophies and agendas for the true answers found in GOD's WORD.
The heathen are raging today because they have rejected GOD's WORD, the Bible, and GOD's SON, JESUS CHRIST.  Because they will not submit to GOD's rule, they join with other CHRIST-rejecters and take counsel together in an effort to rid themselves of GOD.  It is no wonder, then, that GOD's people are also the object of their rage (vv.1-3).  So loud is the raging of the heathen today that we are apt to forget that GOD will perform HIS WORD and execute HIS divine justice upon all who mock HIM and oppress HIS people (vv.4-9). This psalm closes with the important reminder that the LORD's blessing rests upon all who put their trust in HIM.  Therefore, we must continue to witness to the unsaved, even in the midst of harsh opposition (vv.10-12).  Faithful service for GOD will lead to great rejoicing.  We have glorious news that the world needs to hear.
