"Give Due Diligence"

John 5:39-40 "Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of ME. And ye will not come to ME, that ye might have life."
"Search the Scriptures." What better advice could ever be given to a world of people steeped in sin and in need of redemption ? These words were spoken by the SAVIOR to Jewish religionists who prided themselves in their knowledge of the Scriptures. They believed they knew them quite well, yet on another occasion, JESUS informed a group of conniving Sadducees, "Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures" (Matthew 22:29 pictured above). These religious Jews thought they had eternal life because they were well-versed in the Old Testament Scriptures, but they rejected the very ONE of WHOM those Scriptures testified and would not come to HIM, that they "might have life" (v.40).
The word translated "search" means "to search diligently or anxiously." In his commentary, Albert Barnes says, "It is applied to miners, who search for precious metals -- who look anxiously for the bed of the ore with an intensity or anxiety proportionate to their sense of the value of the metal. . . .It means a diligent, faithful, anxious investigation." This is no mere casual reading of GOD's WORD. It is echoed again in Paul's words to Timothy: "Study to show thyself approved unto GOD," (2nd.Timothy 2:15 pictured above). "Study" means "to use speed, to make effort, be prompt or earnest -- to (give) diligence." Joshua, the new leader of Israel after the death of Moses, was also instructed in this matter: "This book of the Law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein" (Joshua 1:8). Meditate on GOD's WORD and obey it. In this way, you will truly prosper and have good success. Give due diligence and search the Scriptures daily. JED
