(The Fools Series Part # 3) Proverbs 14:1-12 "Every wise woman buildeth her house; but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the LORD: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth HIM. In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them. Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox. A faithful witness will not lie; but a false witness will utter lies. A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not; but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth. Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge. The wisdom of the prudent is to understand HIS way: but the folly of fools is deceit. Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favor. The heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy. The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish. There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death."
Our text provides another significant contrast between those who are wise and those whom GOD deems to be fools. The fool is perverse (v.2) and proud (v.3); he is a liar (v.5) and an unsuccessful seeker of wisdom (v.6). The fool is also a prime candidate for becoming a victim of deceit due to his immense lack of discernment (v.8). He believes only what "seemeth right" (v.12) and then suffers the consequences. Furthermore, "fools make a mock at sin" (v.9); that is, they make light of sin and its effects. Some fools go so far as to completely reverse the standards of righteousness and sin set by GOD, "call[ing] evil good, and good evil" (Isaiah 5:20-23 pictured above). This is especially true today with regard to the sexual immorality so rampant in our culture. It is logical that the unsaved would seek to rationalize their own immorality, and it is even understandable that religious liberals would do the same. But when those who profess to be evangelical in doctrine claim that sodomites, lesbians, pre-marital fornication, extra-marital fornication outside of their marriage partner, etc. are "gifts of GOD" rather than dangerous sins, they thereby identify themselves as fools in the sight of the LORD by "call[ing] evil good."
When any professing Christian seeks to justify living like the unregenerate culture fellow believers have a clear responsibility to "go from the presence of a foolish man" (v.7) and to "have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them" (Ephesians 5:11 pictured above). Folly and destruction follow the fool, which is yet another reason why the biblical doctrine of separation is so important in our day. We must have the same view of sin that GOD has so HE will not regard us as fools in HIS sight. MHR
Your servant in CHRIST,
