Revelation 1:8 "I AM ALPHA and OMEGA, the beginning and the ending, saith the LORD which is, and which was, and which is to come the ALMIGHTY."
Alpha and Omega - Alpha is the first letter in the Greek alphabet, and omega is the last. In today's text, the LORD JESUS calls HIMSELF the "Alpha and Omega" and elaborates on this title as follows: "I AM . . . the beginning and the ending . . . which is, and which was, and which is to come." JESUS CHRIST has always existed from eternity past, and HE will always exist in eternity future. Scripture continually proclaims the timeless reality and deity of GOD the SON. Why is this truth so necessary for us to understand ? First, it is important because the eternality and deity of JESUS CHRIST are essential to our salvation, for if JESUS were not GOD, our faith is in vain. Second, we must see JESUS as the ALPHA and OMEGA because it is only when we recognize CHRIST as being "from everlasting to everlasting" (Psalm 90:2 pictured above) that we can find peace and assurance in knowing what HE declares in HIS WORD will certainly come to pass.
The ALMIGHTY - In this same text, JESUS ascribes another name to HIMSELF. Not only is HE "ALPHA and OMEGA," but HE is also "the ALMIGHTY." The very SAVIOR WHO shed HIS precious blood for the sins of the world conquered death by rising from the grave. HE is so potent that death itself could not contain HIM ! Our SAVIOR has the eternal power to save us from the grasp of sin and death, to keep us saved for all eternity, to conquer evil, to judge the living and the dead, to create living and nonliving substance - the list could continue indefinitely. The LORD JESUS CHRIST can do anything consistent with HIS nature. And, because HE is our personal SAVIOR, we can be certain that HE will keep us and protect us from Satan himself - the enemy of our soul. MDC
